Why do so many texas holdem poker players take bad beat after bad beat? Sure, bad beats happen in poker all the time, even when you make the right decisions. But that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about the bad beats you can prevent. So how do you prevent them?

Don’t look back. That’s how you prevent these types of bad beats in texas holdem. What do I mean by that? Looking back can get you in trouble in poker the same way it gets many investors in trouble. They look back and second guess and this affects their future decision making. If you make the right decision and lose you have to forget it and move on.

Let’s use an example of a recent hand I played. I started the hand with K-J suited and paid to see the flop. Four other players stuck around, too. The flop came down - no Ace, no face cards but a possible straight and flush. All four other players raised.

The correct play for me was to fold. The odds weren’t good. I folded. A Jack came down on the turn and a King on the river. Ouch! I should’ve stayed in the hand, right? Well, no. I made the right decision even though it went against me.

So where did I go wrong on this hand? Where’s the preventable bad beat? It happened a few hands later. Again, I had K-J suited to start the hand. I remembered the last time so I played. And I paid. I stayed in the hand all the way to the river and came up with nothing. A preventable bad beat based on the outcome of a previous hand where I really made the right decision.

If you have a sell rule as an investor and you follow it, you do not follow the sold stock. Why not? Because if it goes up after you sell, you’re more inclined to break your own rules the next time. And that’s what gets you into trouble. The same thing goes for texas holdem. If you make the right decision and the outcome goes against you, you have to forget it and move on. Otherwise, you end up in trouble.

On a side note, know your weakness. Even before these hands, mine is K-J suited. It just looks like a powerful hand to me - possible straigh, flush and/or powerful two pair potential. But guess what? It’s not a made hand, which means it’s really nothing more than a coin flip if I play the hand.

I know it’s my weakness so I’m learning to do a better job of decision making when I get than hand in texas holdem. If you can do the same, you’ll improve your texas holdem play instantly.
