Imagine yourself sitting at a $1/2 table in your favourite poker room. You have been playing it fairly tight and aggressive. Finally you get the hand you have been waiting for, the ace and king of spades. It is time to get some action, it is time to get busy!

You raise preflop and three other players calls you. The flop comes as follows Ace, Ace and Jack. Nice hit you think. Of course you bet to have a good firm grip on the game. One player fold, one call and the last to act gives you a reraise. Before hitting the raise button you think that it is payday. The callingstation calls and the player that raised you calls. Ok, now you showed him how to play poker!

The turn adds an eight to the board, totally irrelevant, you are on the roll here. You bet, the callingstation calls and the next player carefully calls your bet.

The river gives you the nine of diamonds. It is a done deal you think when hitting the raise button. The callingstation folds…the underdog raises. What? Come on, you are a big underdog, face it and give me your money now! You throw him a raise only to get a reraise in your face. What is this? You are sitting here with trips of aces and this guy just can’t understand that you dominate him. Showdown comes and you are ready to rake in the money, hehe.

While jumping up’n down you suddenly see his hand..Ace and a Jack…

What went wrong? And how could you be so ignorant?

What if I told you that the guy you were playing against has a solid tight aggressive play, would that have helped? Or if I gave you the statistics of his play? He goes to the flop about 17% of the time and usually raises those hands. He folds more than 80% of the hands on the flop. When he plays all the way to showdown he wins 85% of the time. Scary, right?

Now if you had this information you probably would have played the hand in a different manner and you would have known that you are likely to be the underdog if you don’t hold the nut hand.
