Play Money Vs Real Money - Changing Your Mindset
Filed Under Gambling |
In order to be a winning poker player you need to have the right attitude. You have to have the right mindset. If you want to play poker for fun, great, drink some beer, get together with your buddies and lose fifty bucks, hey its all for fun, right? However, if you want to play for money and profit then you have to change your thinking. Sure you can still have fun, but if your number one goal is to be making a profit then you must approach poker from a different stand point.
A lot of my friends refuse to play with me any more. Why? It could be the fact that I am ultra competitive and hate to lose or it could be the fact that I usually walk away with most of the money afterwards. A very famous player once said that he would bust his Grandmother in a game if he had to. Now that’s winning poker.
If you are one of those people that are looking at this as your part time job or a second income then you had better start treating it that way. Once you start to falter from that and start to think, hey what is one hand or two hands, the next thing you know you will start saying what’s one losing session or two? This is when the slippery slope effect occurs and you find yourself no longer winning and taking things less seriously than you normally would have.
I once had that “Ah, it’s all for fun” attitude. Want to know what that got me? No money that’s what. As with anything else, getting better is just a matter of experience and practice. You can use your home games as your practice field. Use it to try different strategies, try your skills at reading poker tells and to hone your general poker game. However, you always need to keep your eyes on the prize and that is to make money. The reason I say you can practice in home games, is because it is not as tense as playing with people you don’t know. And besides, you should be making more at home games because people are usually more apt to call with nothing and raise with garbage.
Start treating poker less as a hobby and more as your second job or part time job and you will start to turn more of a profit. Make sure to get your practice and table time in and you will be a winning poker player before you know it.
